He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the representative and regulatory body for psychologists in the UK, and is listed in the 'Directory of Expert Witnesses' which is maintained by the Society (see link below). Dr Macpherson provides clinical and forensic psychological reports in civil and criminal cases and oral evidence in Court. He has been instructed during the past ten years by the Crown and Appeal Courts, the Court of Session, the Sheriff and High Courts throughout Scotland, and the Magistrate, Youth and Crown Courts in England. He has prepared reports for Criminal Defence Lawyers, the Scottish Executive, and the Parole Board for Scotland and England. He practises as a NHS Consultant at the State Hospital in Scotland and has previous experience as a psychologist with the Police and the Prison Service. He consults outwith the NHS in Scotland and elsewhere by arrangement. Dr Macpherson accepts instruction in criminal cases to assess fitness to plead, competence to stand trial of adolescents and adults with a learning disability, understanding of the police caution, and confession evidence, and undertakes clinical risk assessments of sexual and violent offenders prior to sentencing. He accepts instruction in civil cases from pursuers and defenders and as a single joint expert following road traffic accidents, industrial accidents, criminal injury and psychological injury, and parenting in child custody cases. Dr Macpherson has published widely in areas including mental health and disorder, competence to stand trial, and clinical risk assessment - including having contributed a Chapter to the leading medical textbook, 'Lyttle's Mental Health and Disorder' (3rd Edition) (info).
