He has also undertaken quality assurance and control for industries including offshore and marine, electronics, transport including aerospace and automotive, leisure, construction and civil engineering, petrochemical and oil. He acts for legal and insurance clients as an expert witness. He has experience in research & development of new materials and equipment including alloys for casting and forging, analysis of paints and oils, fuels, metals and plastics. Also corrosion engineering, metallurgy, materials selection, wear, oxidation, materials including fibre-reinforced composites, ceramics, glasses and plastics, inspection and non-destructive testing. He is experienced in welding technology and the development of welding electrodes and consumables. Derek Bates has lectured to engineers throughout industry on programmes organised by the Department of Trade & Industry, and also to professional bodies such as the Plastics & Rubber Institute, the Institute of Corrosion and many other engineering and professional organisations.
