Oral and Maxillofacal surgery | Pain management in the context of oral and maxillofacial injuries and surgery Background information :- Dr Tara Renton has been a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Institute of Dentistry since 2003. She has responsibility for a number of areas within the department. Her primary role has been to focus, analyse, adjust and formalise the extensive teaching programme delivered to the dental students within the London Dental Institute. She is also responsible for establishing a cohesive and progressive day case surgery/sedation service, running the day case service, providing teaching material for dental students and clinical research. Research :- Dr Renton's main area of research interest is Trigeminal nerve injury related to oral surgery. Following her PhD in the assessment of subjective and objective approaches to determining these injuries, she has pioneered thermal quantitative assessment of the trigeminal nerve and developed it as a new method of assessment for these injuries. She is also pioneering translational work linking basic science with clinical assessment on trigeminal nerve injury in humans, including the assessment of specific pain related channel/receptor expression and functionality. She is also a member of the Queen Mary Academic Pain Group and has an interest in oro-facial pain, particularly in relation to trigeminal nerve injuries. She has initiated a Trigeminal nerve injury service, providing a clinic and opportunity to expedite the surgical management of these cases.
