Career background :-

Jonathan Spencer has has been a full-time independent forensic
scientist for 10 years. He has over 30 years' experience of firearms
and ballistics, and 10 years' experience of video, photography and
related imagery material.

After serving with the Royal Air Force Police from 1975 to 1985,
(mainly on armed anti-terrorist and security duties including optical
and electronic surveillance), he obtained a BSc(Hons) degree in1989,
after which he undertook postgraduate research for three years at the
University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Subsequently, he was employed
by an independent forensic science laboratory as a senior reporting
forensic scientist from 1995 to 2003. During this period, he was
instructed in more than 500 cases, predominantly involving firearms
and video evidence.

Firearms experience :-

Mr Spencer has held a life-long interest in firearms and has made
a study of their design, mechanism and performance for more than
30 years. To this end, he owns a technical reference library relating
to firearms that extends to more than 1,000 titles. His experience
covers a wide range of firearm types and includes pistols, rifles,
shotguns, machine-guns and rifle-launched grenades. Firearms
casework encompasses a wide range of issues, ranging from simple
identification and classification of firearms and ammunition to the
analysis and reconstruction of complex shooting incidents. Some
exemplar cases are detailed on his company's web site.

Video and photographic experience :-

Mr Spencer has been instructed in well over 150 cases involving
the examination and analysis of video and other imagery for the
purpose of identifying the people, objects or events recorded
thereon. He has examined many tens of thousands of questioned
video and photographic images and has spent in excess of 1,300
hours examining imagery material and writing technical reports
on that material.

Mr Spencer has testified to all levels of Court in England & Wales,
Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. The Court
of Appeal has recently described him as 'a most careful and
impressive witness' - R v Paul Cleeland [2002] EWCA Crim 293
