Career background :- Jonathan Spencer has has been a full-time independent forensic scientist for 10 years. He has over 30 years' experience of firearms and ballistics, and 10 years' experience of video, photography and related imagery material. After serving with the Royal Air Force Police from 1975 to 1985, (mainly on armed anti-terrorist and security duties including optical and electronic surveillance), he obtained a BSc(Hons) degree in1989, after which he undertook postgraduate research for three years at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Subsequently, he was employed by an independent forensic science laboratory as a senior reporting forensic scientist from 1995 to 2003. During this period, he was instructed in more than 500 cases, predominantly involving firearms and video evidence. Firearms experience :- Mr Spencer has held a life-long interest in firearms and has made a study of their design, mechanism and performance for more than 30 years. To this end, he owns a technical reference library relating to firearms that extends to more than 1,000 titles. His experience covers a wide range of firearm types and includes pistols, rifles, shotguns, machine-guns and rifle-launched grenades. Firearms casework encompasses a wide range of issues, ranging from simple identification and classification of firearms and ammunition to the analysis and reconstruction of complex shooting incidents. Video and photographic experience :- Mr Spencer has been instructed in well over 150 cases involving the examination and analysis of video and other imagery for the purpose of identifying the people, objects or events recorded thereon. He has examined many tens of thousands of questioned video and photographic images and has spent in excess of 1,300 hours examining imagery material and writing technical reports on that material. Mr Spencer has testified to all levels of Court in England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. The Court of Appeal has recently described him as 'a most careful and impressive witness' - R v Paul Cleeland [2002] EWCA Crim 293 (see 'Press Article' link, above).
